When I was in the 6th grade my life changed for the better.” |
When I was in the 6th grade my life changed for the better. My mom and I had moved from a three story house in Cascade Hills (west Atlanta) to an apartment in the villages of East Lake (east Atlanta), just for me to have the opportunity to play golf for free. We made this decision after the baseball season ended in 2012 and to be honest I was treated very unfairly. Even though I was one of the best on the team I would often get subbed out to let the coach’s son play. I was taking lessons playing golf already and had been getting better at it. My coach at the time was Mr. Elijah Walker, who passed in 2014, and he was the reason I fell in love with the game. He embodied the principle of making golf simple and not over complex. This is the mindset I take with me to the golf course to this day. At that time, I was finding that I had a god-given talent for golf. I had put all the other sports I was playing on hold and decided to pursue golf competitively. If it wasn’t for my mom believing in my dream at such a young age, I wouldn’t have all the accolades I have today. Winning the 2019 High School State Championship is one of the biggest achievements I have in golf. I couldn’t have done this with help from The First Tee,Coach Nyre, Coach Jeff, Drew Charter School, East Lake Foundation, my teammates, and my family. Being the first all African-American team to win State made my entire community proud and gave them hope. I plan on continuing to make them proud by going to college on a golf scholarship and receiving a degree in mechanical engineering. After I complete that goal I want to follow my admirations of playing on the PGA Tour while still crafting my skills in engineering. I assure myself that the path I am taking now is leading me in the right direction to excel in these goals.
